"Is it worthwhile to treat clients with melasma (and other pregnancy-related hyperpigmentation) while pregnant, or is it best to wait until after they’ve given birth?"
  • Print

Hormones are constantly changing during, and even after pregnancy, and no one can predict how they will change once the hormones stabilize. So it’s best to wait until after your client is finished breast-feeding to begin treating hyperpigmentation. However, insist they use sunscreen that (preferably) contains Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide to prevent any hyperpigmentation because melasma is not just hormonal, it is also triggered by UV rays.
